3 Maintenance Tips to Lengthen the Life of Your Roof

It can be expensive to have a new roof put on your home. If your home has an older roof, there are a few things you can do to help lengthen the life of your roof, so you aren't needing to have your roof replaced before its end of life. A typical asphalt roof lasts around 15–20 years. If your roof hasn't surpassed this time or you aren't in this time frame just yet, you may be able to lengthen the life of your roof. Read on for some maintenance tips for your roof.

1. Clean Your Gutters

You may wonder what your gutters have to do with your roof, but they have everything to do with your roof. If your gutters are full, creating a dam. When this occurs, water will build up and begin to fill up and soak your roof. When the water sits for too long like this, it can seep into the roofing shingles and into the sheeting below, which will then cause a leak in your home. If you leak in your roof, it can cause very expensive damage to your home. Be sure to clean the gutters around your home at least two times per year—in the spring and fall, when there is more debris falling from trees.

2. Replace and Repair Damaged Shingles

If you notice any shingles that are out of place or shingles that are missing, you need to replace them or repair them as needed. This can happen with time and from wind or other types of weather. Keep an eye on your roof and watch for this type of damage. Repair it as needed, so you don't leave your home open to water or other things that can potentially damage your home.

3. Remove Hanging Tree Limbs

Remove tree limbs that are hanging over your roof. These tree limbs may not appear heavy, but when they fall onto your home during a storm, they can cause all kinds of damage. They can loosen shingles, or they can be heavy enough that they go through your roof and into your home. These limbs can also be an easy way for pests to get into your roof and wreaking havoc. If you have limbs hanging over your home, have them removed.

You can lengthen the life of your roof with proper maintenance, however, if your roof is in poor shape and has already exceeded its typical lifespan, it may be best to have your roof replaced. Call a roofing service to have your roof replaced.

Avoiding Remodeling Challenges

Do you have things about your place that you are less than pleased with? For example, I absolutely love my home, but I have never really liked the main level floor plan, as it cuts people off from one another when they are trying to hang out. I started thinking about ways to improve my experience about a year ago, and my friend recommended a great remodeling contractor with years of experience. They came out, did what they could to make things better, and completely transformed my entire experience. Read more about remodeling on my blog to find out what you need to do.
